Why practice yoga?

Up to 90% of doctor visits are stress-related. Yoga tackles the root cause, strengthening the body, calming the mind, and improving balance and flexibility daily.

Practice

Yoga at UMA is for everyone! Beginners, experienced practitioners, and those returning to movement after injury. Group classes are deliberately kept small with limited numbers so we can focus on safe alignment and accessible sequencing, combining effectiveness with an enjoyable, uplifting experience.

We offer a broad spectrum of classes, from dynamic Hatha flows to gentle chair yoga and deeply restorative somatic practices.

Sequences are designed to:

  • Improve joint mobility and muscular strength

  • Supports pain reduction

  • Support nervous system regulation and stress reduction

  • Promote restorative rest and recovery

  • Leave you feeling steadier, clearer, and energised.

Approach

We are passionate about teaching yoga and sharing the health and well-being benefits. Our approach blends traditional yoga principles with contemporary movement science and trauma-aware techniques. Every class is thoughtfully structured to:

  • Sequence poses safely and progressively

  • Honor individual differences and needs

  • Integrate research-backed methods for mental and physical health and wellbeing

Space

The building began as a horse stable, before evolving into a yoga space. Its original structural bones remain, giving warmth and character. The name Uma carries layered meaning across cultures: in Japanese, uma means horse, honouring the building’s origins; in Hindu mythology, Uma is another name for Shakti, the goddess of grace, creativity, and embodied power.

The studio’s earthy, olive-green Japanese clay-plaster walls and preserved structural wooden beams create a calm, settled environment.

We are fully stocked with premium quality props which we provide free of charge to support you in every class, including Mexican El Paso thick woven horse blankets, and Manduka yoga mats, bolsters and blocks.
